Responding to today’s Autumn Statement, Newcastle North MP Catherine McKinnell said:

‘Today’s Autumn Statement was evidence of the Government’s economic failure over the last six years, with productivity down, growth forecasts down, deficit targets abandoned and our national debt expected to reach record levels next year.  It was also yet another stark reminder of the major challenges ahead as we begin the process of leaving the EU.

‘Equally concerning was the Chancellor’s total failure to address many of the main concerns for my constituents. There was no mention of additional support for social care – despite the system being clearly at crisis point, and the huge knock-on effects this is having on the rest of the NHS.

‘Nor was there anything for schools or early years education, both of which are facing very serious funding issues – unless of course you want to build a new grammar school, with the Government setting aside an incredible £50million a year for this.

‘Low paid working parents across the North East still face being up to £2,800 a year worse off a result of cuts to Universal Credit.  And I’m beyond infuriated and disappointed that the Chancellor continues to ignore the plight of women who have had their State Pension age changed at very short notice. Many of these women are in serious financial difficulty but the Government has passed up yet another opportunity to put this injustice right.’
