Small Business Saturday has grown significantly since its launch in this country in 2013, and is now the biggest annual celebration of small businesses in the UK – encouraging shoppers back to Britain’s High Streets and to use small shops, as well as celebrating the contribution of entrepreneurs and small firms across all sectors to the UK’s economy.

Last year’s event saw customers spending £623million with small firms on the day, an increase of £119million – or 24% – on 2014.

Catherine visited a number of small, independent traders on Gosforth High Street on Saturday (5th December), including Rosie’s Bistro & Patisserie, yumLush gift shop, Donald Gilberts Butchers, The Naked Deli and Thorpe’s of Gosforth – a third generation family hardware business opened on the High Street back in 1947.

Catherine said:

‘Small businesses play such a huge role in making our local High Streets special, and it was great to see all of the firms I visited bustling with customers in the busy run-up to Christmas.

‘It’s so important that we try and support small, local businesses wherever we can – and I am looking forward to continuing to work these firms to help address the challenges they also face.’
