Optimized-P1020952Newcastle North MP, Catherine McKinnell, visited the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Friday (27th June) to see the high standard care it provides to people with multiple sclerosis.

The clinic for people with MS is regarded as one of the best in the country with patients given access to a wide range of treatments and offers regular appointments with a neurologist. This is in stark contrast to other areas of the country where access to MS treatments and specialists is inconsistent and patchy.

Ms McKinnell is an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on multiple sclerosis in Westminster, and has long had an interest in MS.

She said: ‘The MS specialists at the RVI are known for their passion and determination to get the best possible treatment for people in the North East living with MS.

Sadly the NHS postcode lottery means that not everyone in the country is able to access such a high standard of treatment and that is why I am backing the MS Society campaign “Treat Me Right” which is pushing for all people with MS to be able to access the right treatment at the right time, no matter where they live.’

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of MS Society said: ‘At the MS Society we think that everyone should have a high standard of care of the quality seen at Royal Victoria Infirmary, no matter where they live.

‘Catherine McKinnell MP has long been a good friend to MS Society and we are delighted that she is backing our Treat Me Right campaign.’
