Catherine McKinnell, MP for Newcastle North, attended National Care Home Open Day on 17th June at Briardene Care Home on Newbiggin Lane in Westerhope, along with friends, families and members of the local community.

The morning commenced with tea, coffee and scones, with Catherine meeting residents, staff and volunteers at the home. The Newcastle North MP cut the open day cake alongside Home Manager, Maria Cacovean, and she received a card and flowers from the team and residents.

Maria, Home Manager, said:

‘We really enjoyed our day, it was a time to celebrate with our residents and enjoy ourselves. It was a pleasure for our team and the residents to meet the local MP. She gave us plenty of her time and brought a sense of occasion to the day.’

National Care Home Open Day is a UK wide initiative inviting care homes to open their doors to the public. Thousands of care homes across the UK take part each year, creating lasting links and developing friendships across different generations.

Catherine said:

‘It was very heartening to receive such a warm welcome from the team at Briardene last Friday, and to see how keen the staff, residents, relatives and volunteers were to celebrate the home’s work for National Care Home Open Day.

‘I look forward to continuing to work with Briardene, and supporting the team and residents in any way I can.’
