Catherine McKinnell visits Throckley Primary SchoolNewcastle North MP, Catherine McKinnell, paid a recent visit to Throckley Primary School to congratulate staff, pupils, parents and governors on their assessment as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

The school, which was placed in ‘special measures’ five years ago, was graded as outstanding by Ofsted in November 2013, in all four categories of assessment: achievement of pupils; quality of teaching; behaviour and safety of pupils; and leadership and management.

Catherine was given a tour of the school by Head Girl and Head Boy, Evie and Issack – both of whom are in Year 6 – alongside Headteacher, Mrs Julie Stuart, and Chair of Governors, Mrs Helen Richardson. She also heard about the different steps taken to improve pupils’ attainment, including the termly Attendance Challenge Prize Draw which has seen attendance improve by 3%, now being above the national average.

Catherine said:

‘It was a real pleasure to visit Throckley Primary and spend time with staff and pupils in what is clearly a beautiful and caring school environment. Every class was absolutely engrossed in their learning and spoke enthusiastically about their work.  I was particularly impressed by Evie and Issack during my visit, who are really excellent ambassadors for the school.

‘The progress that has been made at Throckley Primary over recent years is truly impressive, and is testament to the hard work of all the staff, pupils, parents and governors who are rightly proud of their ‘outstanding’ achievement.’

Headteacher Julie Stuart said:

‘I am over the moon that Throckley Primary School has received the highest accolade – to be recognised as an outstanding school in all areas, providing excellence in both academic and personal development.’
