Newcastle North MP Catherine McKinnell was pleased to join pupils at Waverley Primary School in Dumpling Hall this morning to talk about her role as a Member of Parliament ahead of Parliament Week in the first week of November.

Parliament Week is a UK-wide festival taking place from 2-8 November that aims to engage people, especially young people, with Parliament and empower them to get involved.

Catherine joined pupils in Year 6 at Waverley Primary School to discuss her role as a Member of Parliament, what inspired her to get involved in politics and stand to be a Member of Parliament and how Parliament works.

Following the visit Catherine commented “It was brilliant to see the pupils so engaged in politics and interested in their local community.

“The pupils shared some really insightful comments about our local area, as well as the bigger national and international picture, and I was pleased to be given the opportunity to answer their questions about my work, Parliament and the role of Members of Parliament.

“The teachers and pupils from Waverley Primary are now keen to visit Parliament soon to see Westminster first-hand.”
