Newcastle North MP, Catherine McKinnell has condemned the government today, after unemployment figured have reached their highest level since 1992.

Catherine McKinnell said:

“People in my constituency and across the North East are hurting. Over 2,000 of the people I represent are claiming Jobseekers Allowance – that’s 10 people for every job in local jobcentres.  The Prime Minister claims that the space left by public sector cuts will be filled by the private sector, but across the North East in the last quarter, for every 13 jobs lost in the public sector, only one was created in the private sector.

“The coalition’s betrayal is blatant. The government needs to act fast and we need to see some viable plans for improving job prospects and the future of local businesses before another generation of workers is lost.”
