Catherine McKinnell MP has welcomed today’s decision by the High Court that the Government cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – which will officially commence the UK’s negotiations with the European Union on exiting the EU – without a vote in Parliament.
The Newcastle North MP said:
‘Regardless of how people voted in the referendum on leaving the European Union, it is vital that the Government is open and transparent with the British public – and their democratically elected representatives – about its negotiating stance on this critical issue.
‘Requiring the Government to explain its position to Parliament before Article 50 is triggered will do just that.
‘This is a good day for democracy.’
