Catherine’s Catch Up – 07 April

From responding to debates as Minister for School Standards to meeting residents in Newcastle North, here is a look into my week.

As always, for regular updates, please find me on social media here.

Meeting residents in Newcastle North

Last week, I held my regular constituency surgery – a chance for people living in Newcastle North to voice their concerns about a range of issues, from problems with social services to the DVLA.

My team and I ensure that each resident is supported and work to address their concerns, for example, by contacting the local council or appropriate government department.

Primary school visit

As Minister for School Standards, I visited a primary school in Hertfordshire with the local MP, Josh Dean, to discuss the new Specialist Level 5 Apprenticeship Programme – a brilliant way for teaching assistants to learn, develop and progress within their careers.

Increasing access to sport

I responded to an important debate in the House of Commons on the need to increase access to sport and PE in schools, outlining the Government’s commitment to getting more children active by protecting time for PE in schools and supporting the role grassroots clubs play in expanding access to sport.

Meeting with MPs

As a Minister, I spend time in Westminster meeting with key stakeholders, MPs and experts to discuss the Government’s Plan for Change to improve our education system.

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Baroness Sue Campbell, a champion of sport in the UK, to discuss increasing opportunities to PE and sport in school – especially for girls. I also met with Minister Reynolds to talk about how the Treasury and the Department for Education can work together to drive up standards in our schools.

Improving RSHE in our schools

Netflix’s new drama Adolescence has sparked an important conversation about children’s attitudes to relationships and sex. I responded to a timely debate on the subject and set out the Government’s dedication to delivering high quality RSHE to support young people to develop positive attitudes and exercise critical thinking skills.

Support for pharmacies

I am so pleased that a new deal between the Government and Community Pharmacy England will benefit patients in Newcastle North and get pharmacies back on their feet.
