On a visit to the Traidcraft headquarters, Newcastle North MP and Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on International Anti-Corruption, Catherine McKinnell learnt about the excellent work done by Traidcraft and the fair trade movement.

Traidcraft uses its unique structure of being trading company and a development charity to use fair trade as a way of fighting poverty and helping developing countries transform their economies. The charity, founded in 1979, has its roots in the North East, with its headquarters based in Gateshead.

During the visit, the MP discussed issues surrounding fair trade and international development with Traidcrafts’s Chief Executive, Paul Chandler, as well Traidcraft recent campaign on the Groceries Code Adjudicator.

Traidcraft had been calling on the Government to ensure that the Groceries Code Adjudicator had the power to impose fines and following a campaign from Tradecraft and from the Labour Party, the Government have agreed to extend the powers of the Adjudicator.

Following a tour of the warehouse Catherine commented “Traidcraft have achieved so much over the past 33 years, it was great to visit their headquarters and warehouse here in the North East and hear about their successes, but also importantly, their plans for the future.

“Traidcraft business and charity is about helping developing countries transform their own economies through business and trade and I had the opportunity to hear of the great work that they do to promote fair trade here and abroad.”
