Catherine McKinnell, MP for Newcastle North, is urging her constituents to make use of the freephone Home Heat Helpline, set up by Britain’s energy companies, to receive free advice on receiving help with their energy bills.

Catherine said:

“The bitterly cold weather of recent weeks has had us all turning up the heating in our homes. Yet, we all worry about the costs of doing this – both economic and environmental.

“I would urge my constituents to make use of this free service to see if they are eligible to receive support for things like grants for cavity wall and loft insulation or reduced ‘social’ energy tariffs.

“Recently published research suggests that there are 5.2million households across the country that could claim this type of support, but only 12% have actually claimed free help – despite the fact it could typically save £260 a year on their energy bills.

“The Home Heat Helpline can be contacted on 0800 33 6699, or the advice is also available at www.homeheathelpline.org.uk. I am keen to ensure that in these difficult economic times my constituents – and particularly the more vulnerable ones – receive all the support that they are entitled to.”
