MP speaks out against cuts in schools programme

MP for Newcastle upon Tyne North, Catherine McKinnell, has responded to news that the Education Secretary, Michael Gove, is to announce huge cuts to school rebuilding plans.

‘This is yet another example of the Lib Con’s shocking economic short-sightedness,’ said Ms McKinnell. ‘This decision is not only bad news for students and teachers but also for local businesses which would have benefitted hugely from additional work during this difficult time.’

‘It’s beyond belief that the Government is abandoning essential plans to renovate schools in desperate need of investment whilst at the same time pumping millions into their ‘free-school’ project which, it is clear, will disproportionately benefit the wealthy. This really is a tragic display of skewed values.’
