Night time Economy Petitions debate

Catherine McKinnell, MP for Newcastle North, has today – 23 April 2021 – welcomed the Court of Appeal judgement clearing the names of 39 wrongly accused former subpostmasters.

Last year Catherine supported an Early Day Motion calling for a full inquiry into this matter and has welcomed today’s judgement as a victory for those impacted and campaigners.

Following the decision Catherine commented “Too many innocent people have had their names tarnished and lives and livelihoods ruined by this scandal. Today’s ruling is a long overdue step in clearing those innocent names.

“However, many more victims need to see their names cleared and that is why I support the establishment of a full inquiry. We must get to the bottom of how this was allowed to happen and how so many innocent people have had their lives and reputations ruined.

“Only an independent full inquiry will secure justice for all of those who have been caught up in this scandal”.
