Catherine McKinnell join Cheviot Primary pupils for 50th birthday celebrationsNewcastle North MP, Catherine McKinnell, joined staff, pupils and parents of Cheviot Primary as they celebrated the Newbiggin Hall-based school’s 50th birthday during the last week of term.

The school held a special concert with pupils – dressed in costumes from the 1960s onwards – re-enacting events from each decade, including the first moon landing and The Beatles playing in Newcastle. A community fun day was then held in the school’s grounds, including fairground rides and a variety of different stalls and fundraising activities.

Catherine also received a tour of the school from headteacher, Mrs Tetley, as well as a preview of the new nursery for 2-year olds opening at Cheviot Primary in September from the new Early Years lead, Miss Stokes.

Catherine said:

“I had a fantastic time at the special concert, and it was a real honour to join the pupils and their families in celebrating the school’s 50th birthday. The pupils had clearly been preparing for some time for the event, and it was a joy to see the pride they have in their school.

“It was also great to see the new nursery taking shape before it opens in September. This will be a fantastic boost for local families in Newbiggin Hall, and will really support the development of young children in the area.”
